Building the Ogden Temple

When the Ogden temple was being built, each ward in the area was asked to contribute a certain amount of money. The bishop in the Harrisville Ward felt impressed that the young people in the ward should earn the money, since their parents had already paid a great deal in other contributions. He called them together and challenged them to work and sacrifice for the new temple. He explained that they would be blessed for their service.

The young people set about doing many difference kinds of jobs. They painted barns, bottled fruit, tended children, ironed clothes, washed cars, and even laid sewer pipe.

As the young people worked that summer, they were raising money, but they were also working together. They were helping each other, and they were sacrificing--their time, movies, treats, vacations, and clothes. They were sustaining their bishop, becoming more active in the ward, and setting goals to go to "their" temple when the time came to be married. Everyone knew that being of service made them happier.

Show a picture of the Ogden temple, and emphasize that the service of these young people helped build this lovely temple, which has brought joy to them and thousands of others. Ask the following questions:
  • Why did these young people find joy?
  • Do you think it was always easy and fun for them to iron, paint, or take care of children?
