Sharing Time Class Presentation
Whenever possible, class presentations should:
- Be taken from the class lessons.
- Be given after the lesson has been taught in class.
- Correspond with your Primary's monthly theme.
Theme: I am a Child of God
Purpose: To help each child realize that Heavenly Father loves him because he is His child.
Preparation:
Materials needed:
- Chalk and chalkboard or simply-drawn pictures of a fluffy cloud, bird, tree, mirror, and a black crayon.
- Doll (girl or boy)
- Two balloons (one inflated, one not)
Procedure:
Teacher or child explain: We are all children of our Heavenly Father. Our spirit bodies look like our physical bodies.
Choose helpers from the audience. Four children hold or draw pictures of a fluffy cloud, a bird, a tree, a mirror. Another four children are prepared with black crayon or chalk to follow teacher's instructions.
Teacher: If you think the answer to the question I ask is true, circle the picture. If you think it is wrong, put an X through the picture. If you could see your own spirit body, what do you think it would look like? Would it look like a fluffy cloud? Would it look like a bird? Would it look like a tree? Would it look like what you see when you look in a mirror? (Mirror should be circled.) Our spirit bodies look like our physical bodies, and we are all children of Heavenly Father.
Child asks: (Holding a doll the same sex as the child) What is the difference between this doll and me? (The child is alive, has a spirit, the doll doesn't.)
Child asks: (Holding the inflated balloon and the flat balloon.) What is the difference between these balloons? (One has air inside, the other doesn't.) How do you know one has air in it when you can't see the air?
Teacher: Just as we can't see air, we can't see our spirits, but we know they are part of us just as we know the inflated balloon has air inside of it. Because we have a spirit inside our bodies, we can move and breathe. When our spirit leaves our physical bodies, our body can't move or breath anymore.
Play the game "Simon Says". Explain that the children should do what you request only if you preface it with, "Because Heavenly Father has given us a spirit we can . . ." (Such as fold your arms, touch your toes, shut your eyes.) When you just say, "We can . . ." they shouldn't respond. If the children do what the teacher says without saying "Because Heavenly Father has given us a spirit," first, the children are out and should sit down. The game could be repeated to give the children several chances to follow instructions.
Conclude the presentation by having everyone sing "I am a Child of God."
